Here is how you work it out by hand, using the traditional Pythagorean method this calculator follows. You reduce your birth month, your birth day and your birth year separately, then add those three results together, then reduce one final time.

Take someone born on the twelfth of May, nineteen ninety. The month is May, which is 5, and a single digit already, so it stays 5. The day is 12, and 1+2 = 3. The year is 1990: add the digits, 1+9+9+0 = 19, then 1+9 = 10, then 1+0 = 1. Now add the three reduced pieces: 5 + 3 + 1 = 9. That birth date carries Life Path 9.

The one rule that trips people up is the master numbers. If any stage of the reduction lands on 11, 22 or 33, you stop there. You do not keep going. Watch what that does to a birth date like the twenty-second of November, nineteen eighty-seven. November is the eleventh month, and 11 is a master number, so it stays 11 rather than becoming 2. The day is 22, another master number, so it stays 22 rather than becoming 4. The year 1987 reduces normally: 1+9+8+7 = 25, then 2+5 = 7. Add them: 11 + 22 + 7 = 40, and 4+0 = 4. The master numbers were honoured on the way through, and the final total still resolved to a single digit. That is completely normal, and it is why two people born days apart can land somewhere unexpected.
