Your birth date gives you one number. Your name gives you three, and they describe entirely different territory. Where the Life Path shows the road, your name numbers show the woman walking it — what she secretly wants, what she is built to do, and what strangers pick up on within ninety seconds of meeting her.

The three are the Destiny number, calculated from every letter in your full birth name; the Soul Urge number, from the vowels only; and the Personality number, from the consonants only. The logic is elegant once you see it. Vowels are the sounds that come from inside you with the mouth open, so they carry your inner longing. Consonants are formed by the tongue, teeth and lips shaping and blocking the breath, so they carry the version of you that meets the world. Together they make the whole.

Everything runs on the Pythagorean table, which maps the alphabet onto the numbers one through nine in order and then starts again. A through I are 1 to 9. J through R are 1 to 9 again. S through Z are 1 to 8. So A is 1, E is 5, L is 3, S is 1, and so on down the line.

Work through a full name and it becomes obvious. Take CELESTE MORGAN. The vowels are E, E and E from the first name, then O and A from the second. That is 5+5+5 = 15, plus 6 and 1, which gives 22. Twenty-two is a master number, so you stop there — her Soul Urge is 22, the master builder's longing, a woman who will not be satisfied until she is building something at scale. Now the consonants: C, L, S and T from CELESTE, which is 3+3+1+2 = 9, and M, R, G and N from MORGAN, which is 4+9+7+5 = 25. Together that is 34, and 3+4 = 7, so her Personality is 7 — she reads as private, thoughtful, a little unreadable. Finally, all the letters together: 22 + 34 = 56, and 5+6 = 11, another master number. Her Destiny is 11.

The one genuine complication in name numerology is the letter Y, which is sometimes a vowel and sometimes a consonant. The rule this calculator uses is simple and consistent: Y counts as a vowel only when the part of the name it sits in contains no other vowel. In MARY, the A is already doing the vowel work, so the Y is a consonant — the Soul Urge comes from the A alone, giving 1, while the consonants M, R and Y give 4+9+7 = 20, which reduces to 2. In LYN there is no other vowel at all, so the Y is doing the vowel's job and counts as one, giving a Soul Urge of 7, while the consonants L and N give 3+5 = 8.

As for what the results mean, the numbers carry the same core qualities in all three positions — 1 is independent and initiating, 4 is grounded and structural, 7 is analytical and mystical, 9 is compassionate and universal — but the position changes the flavour completely. A 7 in the Soul Urge is a woman who privately craves solitude and study. A 7 in the Personality is a woman other people find hard to read. Same number, very different life.

Two things confuse almost everyone. The first is which name to use. Use your full name exactly as it appears on your birth certificate, middle names included, because that is the name your chart was written under. A married or chosen name is worth calculating too, but read it as a second layer sitting over the original rather than a replacement for it. The second is the assumption that a name number can be wrong or unlucky. There is no such thing. A number you dislike on sight is usually pointing at something in yourself you have not yet made peace with.
